Kansas Highway Patrol Lt. Brent Hemken said there were three victims involved in the head-on collision of two semis on U.S. Highway 54 early Wednesday morning. Both trucks caught fire after impact, burning down to the frames. The highway remains closed.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says a Wednesday morning crash involving two semis killed three people in Kiowa County.

The head-on crash happened about 7 a.m. near milemarker 112 on Highway 54.That crash left the highway closed in both directions for several hours.

On the scene, a lieutenant with the KHP says the three people killed in the crash were the only occupants of the semis involved. He says both trucks caught fire as a result of the crash and burned “almost completely.”

The KHP says further information, including the cause of the crash and the identities of those killed will be confirmed through its crash log
