Parolee dies in auto accident near Atchison

Atchison Globe – October 18, 2018

A man who had absconded from parole after being convicted in a 2017 aggravated battery died overnight Wednesday in a head-on vehicle collision on U.S. Highway 73 just south of Atchison, Kansas.

Atchison County Sheriff Jack Laurie said Nickolas G. Cosgrove, 38, crossed the center line while heading north in an as-yet unspecified vehicle on the highway in the area of 258th Road. Cosgrove, facing north in the southbound lane, crashed into a white SUV driven by Rebecca Cothern, 62, of Leavenworth, Kansas, as she headed south.

First responders pronounced Cosgrove dead at the scene, Laurie said, and transported Cothern to Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph for treatment of a possible broken leg and a shoulder injury.

According to the state Department of Corrections, Cosgrove, who had been living in Atchison at the time of his offense, has been considered an absconded parolee since Sept. 25.

Cosgrove served about eight months of a 19-month sentence in various state prisons for a Jan. 10, 2017, incident. According to archival information, Cosgrove choked his estranged wife to the point of unconsciousness. He pleaded no contest to the charge of aggravated battery before his May 1, 2017, sentencing. He went free on parole in late January.
