A Geary County volunteer firefighter received an award Monday for saving a life while he was off duty.

On July 17, firefighter Billy Crable was driving home with his son along U.S. Highway 77 when he saw what looked like a grass fire on the side of the road. It turned out to be a vehicle in flames. As he approached, Crable noticed the driver was still in the car.

At approximately 9:30 p.m., Micky Black of Lost Springs was driving southbound in a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am when he hit the rear of another vehicle, causing his car to go into a ditch on the side of the road, and flip.

The other car spun counter-clockwise, crossing the center line and stopping in the east ditch facing west.

As Crable approached shortly after the accident had occurred, he saw it was an overturned vehicle that was on fire.

As Black was still in the car, Crable took hold of both his arms and pulled him out several feet despite the flames.

Other drivers assisted him, including the driver of the car Black had hit.

Geary County Fire Chief Garry Berges said he believes the driver wouldn’t have been able to get out of the car on his own. Therefore, Crable had saved his life.

“I really didn’t think about it,” Crable said. “I was going on autopilot.”

Black was transported to Geary Community Hospital for his injuries.

In recognition of his act, Crable was presented with an award from Berges during a county commission meeting.

Crable has been with the fire department for nine years.

He said he wasn’t looking for recognition for his acts.

“Anyone else would have done it too,” he said. “It was a matter of timing.”
