Saturday morning around 4:15 a.m., the Independence Fire Department responded to a fire with flames showing at Garden Walk Apartments, 1701 N. 10th St. Crews responded with the ladder truck and engines where upon arrival, they discovered occupants had jumped from a back window where they tossed a newborn baby, a small child and a teenager down to waiting residents.

The only thing left in the engulfed apartments were animals and the interior crew was able to rescue a German Shepherd and another small dog who are both doing fine after they were administered oxygen.

According to director of Safety and Code Enforcement David Cowan, crews were not sure they could stop the fire at the fire wall therefore made the decision to call for the Neodesha Ladder Truck. “We felt we might lose the whole top of the building,” he explained. “However, with our ladder and a great job by the interior crew, we stopped the fire at the firewall (saving half of the upper story apartments) and it didn’t reach the apartments on the East side.”

The four apartments they saved were free of smoke and water damage but the main power line ran across the attic space on the west side and was destroyed therefore they are not allowed to be occupied.

“We will send a thank you note to Neodesha for their assistance,” Cowan said. “We had the fire under control upon their arrival but they helped out for about an hour before returning.”

The Independence Police Department investigated the incident and were able to determine tenants were smoking on the port and putting the butts in a plastic storage container which they believe was the cause of the fire.
