Fire destroys neighborhood playground in west Wichita

KWCH – August 8, 2018

Kids in one west Wichita neighborhood will have to find a new place to play after a fire Tuesday afternoon.

A neighbor reported the fire in the Deer Glen neighborhood on Hickory Lane, near Central and 119th Street West, around 4:30 p.m.

Crews arrived to find the playground fully engulfed.

They said the playground mulch which is made up of ground-up tires made it hard to extinguish the fire.

The fire caused about $45,000 in damage.

The fire department says kids were playing on the playground earlier in the day but they don’t know if the fire was accidental or intentional.
