A tractor-trailer fire just east of Topeka shut down two lanes of westbound traffic on the Turnpike, causing major backups.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the cab of the semi was fully engulfed in flames around 11:30 a.m. just east of the Topeka terminal.

The blaze left the shell of the cab nearly completely melted away.

The driver, whose name has not been released, managed to escape unharmed, though, authorities said.

The highway reopened shortly after 2 p.m.
