Family and friends gathered Tuesday evening at the Ramada Hotel and Convention Center to recognize firefighters who recently were promoted or who graduated from fire training.

The ceremony at 6 p.m. in the Regency Ballroom honored 26 men and one woman for their promotions, including captain, battalion chief, lieutenant and fire inspector.

One firefighter was recognized with a certificate of appreciation and merit, and four graduated from the 10-week firefighter training program.

Topeka Fire Marshal Michael Martin said during the certificate’s presentation that firefighter Brandon Wenger was attending training in Oklahoma City and, during his free time, visited the Oklahoma City bombing memorial. While there, Martin said, Wenger stabilized a woman at the memorial who was having a medical emergency.

“He quickly exhibited quick thinking, skill, determination and resolve to quickly render aid to an individual who was suffering from a medical emergency,” Martin said.

Martin spoke of another event a few weeks ago in which Wenger was on a plane during his honeymoon and volunteered to stabilize a woman who went into anaphylactic shock while in the air.

Four men who graduated from the Topeka Fire Department’s academy also were recognized during the ceremony.

Kevin Flory, chief of training for the department, said the men completed 10 weeks of training. During training, Flory said, firefighters learn about water supply, ropes, ground ladders, hose evolutions, fire attack methods and fire ventilation methods.

Flory said that with most groups that go through training, there is a mix of people who have a background in firefighting and people who don’t, and he was proud of this group’s ability to come together.

“They do a good job of melding as a team,” Flory said. “They learn kind of what it’s like in the fire department when you become family, and they learn that early on. These guys did an excellent job at that and they worked through the struggles they had.”
