Driver killed in wreck

Leavenworth Times – July 11, 2018

A woman was killed when her car went off of the road and crashed into a tree in northwest Leavenworth County, according to an official with the Sheriff’s Office.

The crash was reported at 4 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of 231st Street and Millwood Road.

The driver, who has been identified as Makayla Carson, 29, Leavenworth, was traveling west on Millwood Road in a 2006 Buick Lucerne.

It is believed she became distracted or fell asleep, causing her to drive off of the road, according to Undersheriff Jim Sherley.

The car crashed through a fence and struck a large tree.

When deputies arrived on the scene, they found Carson in the driver’s seat of the vehicle. She was declared dead after Leavenworth County EMS personnel arrived on the scene, according to Sherley.

She had not been wearing a seat belt. There were no obvious signs that she was impaired.

The investigation is ongoing.
