Deputies search for suspect after burglary report, fire in Sumner County

KWCH – July 11, 2018

Officers in Sumner County are searching for a suspect accused of burglarizing a home while he was armed.

At about 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sumner County deputies responded to a burglary call in the 400 block of South Mayfield Road near Wellington. Information relayed to dispatch was that a subject was inside the house with a gun.

A man at the home was able to leave and run to a neighbor’s house from which he reported seeing smoke coming from the burglarized home.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they found a vehicle on fire behind a shed and smoke coming from the house. Fire crews were able to extinguish the blaze and deputies, with assistance from the Kansas Highway Patrol, searched the area, but did not find the suspected burglar.

The suspect is described as a 35 to 40-year-old man standing about six feet tall and weighing 230 to 250 pounds. The suspect is described as having short, sandy brown hair and was last seen wearing a plaid shirt, tan pants and black boots. He also has a tattoo on his right arm, the suspect description says.
