An apartment caught fire Sunday afternoon in Central Topeka at The Pines Apartments.

The fire originated from a recliner chair in the living room of the first floor apartment at 238 S.W. Gage Boulevard just before 2 p.m. Thursday. The Topeka Fire Department’s preliminary investigations shows the cause to be accidental and associated with smoking.

The two residents evacuated the apartment and were transported to a local hospital for minor injuries. Estimated combined structural and content damages amount to a $10,000 loss.

Topeka Fire Department’s crew extinguished the fire and contained it to the apartment it originated in.
