Firefighters battled a two-alarm fire Saturday at a townhome complex in KCK that took the life of a child.

Crews were called just after 10 a.m. to the College Park Townhomes on North 70th Terrace for reports of people trapped inside a building on the second floor.

KCK Fire Chief Kevin Shirley said the flames got into the attic of the building, and from that point they quickly spread to multiple units.

Fire officials said a child died in the blaze. KCK Police Chief Terry Zeigler initially said two people had died, but fire officials later corrected that information to say only one person was killed. The name and age of the child who died has not been released yet.

Three others were injured and taken to nearby hospitals. Two firefighters were also treated for minor smoke inhalation.

More than two dozen residents are now without their possessions and a place to stay. The Red Cross is on scene trying to provide temporary assistance.

Smoke from the fire could be seen from miles away as fire crews worked to get the fire under control. Officials estimate there was about $500,000 in damage.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time but is under investigation.
