Topeka firefighter’s Local 83 held their annual picnic with extra reason to celebrate this year.

2018 marks the century mark for Local 83, as well as the International Association of Firefighters.

Current and past firefighters and their families enjoyed a meal and saw some old equipment from the creation of the union.

Organizer said it is important for younger firefighters to learn and honor those who fought for better wages and work conditions.

“I wouldn’t have had what I’ve had as far as union aspects if it weren’t for the gentleman that came on starting back in 1918,” Bill Miller, a recently retired firefighter, said.

The picnic lasts two days and will finish on Thursday.
