The Topeka Fire Department said a preliminary investigation into a house fire Sunday morning shows it was an act of arson. They determined the blaze was intentionally set on the home’s back wooden deck.

Fire crews responded to a report of a fire around 1:30 a.m. in the 1500 block of Southeast Washington Street. A Topeka Fire Department Captain on scene said the fire started in the back of the house, and it was vacant at the time.

The fire department also said the fire was quickly extinguished and the damage was confined to the original home, but estimate $7,500 to be the total cost of damages. No one was hurt in the fire, though no working smoke alarms were found inside the building.
