Lorraine Fire Chief Joe Travnichek is recuperating at home, following a leg injury Thursday, May 24, at the G-Stop gas station in Geneseo.

At about 5:30 p.m., Travnichek was standing on the front bumper of his parked truck and checking fluid levels when an unidentified woman allegedly backed into him. His left leg was trapped between the grill guard of his truck and her rear bumper.

A Call from the I-R to the Rice County Sheriff was not immediately returned.

Travnichek’s wife, Kim, said he will return to Salina Regional Health Center for a full diagnosis in about a week, once the swelling subsides.

Kim, who is also a member of the Lorraine Fire Department, along with their 20-year-old son, said department operations will continue as normal. She said two new members were added about a month ago, increasing the staff levels to about 10. As chief, she said, Joe might instruct firefighters on any future calls by phone or text message, or be driven to the scene for observation purposes.

“(W)e have more than enough personnel to cover me,” added Joe, via Facebook. “Like any other company, if you train your people right and treat them well, they will step up when needed.”
