Ellis County fire crews are continuing to monitor the scene of a fire that destroyed an abandoned house in a rural area near the southwest corner of the county.

Crews were called to a house fire in the 1600 block of Northfolk Road shortly before 6 p.m. Saturday. By the time they arrived on scene, the abandoned farmhouse was completely engulfed in flames, said Darin Myers, Ellis County fire chief and emergency management coordinator.

The home is not occupied, and there have been no reported injuries. Crews were expected to depart the scene by 9 p.m., Myers said, noting they were continuing to watch for hot spots since the building had collapsed inward.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.

Ellis County Fire Co. 8 in Schoenchen responded, assisted by companies four, five and six since it was a building fire. The City of Hays also sends assistance under an automatic aid agreement for structure fires.
