Sheriff Bryant Evans says dispatchers notified a deputy of a car driving erratically on US-56 at 7:35 a.m. It was heading eastbound about five miles west of Lyons.

The car was identified when it crossed the center line and almost hit the deputy’s vehicle, forcing him off the side of the road.

The deputy turned around and started to pursue the erratic driver but lost sight of the car due to high speeds.

The deputy contacted Sheriff Evans who says he then spotted a vehicle that matched the description going east on US-56 through the town of Lyons. The sheriff also lost sight of the car.

He then heard on the radio that the Little River police chief found the vehicle at 23rd Road at US-56. The chief turned around and started pursuing the chase vehicle into Mcpherson County where he came upon the crash.

Two people – the passenger of the chase vehicle and the driver of the second vehicle – were killed in the crash. Trooper Ben Gardner says the driver of the chase vehicle was taken to the hospital for treatment but later died from the injuries that sustained.

A resident who lives near the crash site captured the collision on home surveillance.

Highway 56 remains closed while the Critical Highway Accident Response Team (CHART) investigates the crash.
