June 2018 Presidents Article

Good Day Kansas Fire Service. As I write this, our spring seems short lived and is turning into summer very quickly. We had an enjoyable conference in Garden City hosted by Holcomb Community Fire Department in late April. We thank Chief Knight and his department for their hospitality. We all look forward to seeing everyone in Salina in 2019 and Topeka in 2020. I will take a moment to ask you to come to Topeka at the 2020 conference and help Topeka Fire celebrate its 150th anniversary. Topeka Fire has many activities being planned and it is all built around a family friendly event.
At conference, we said good bye to Troy Wolf. We thank him for his ten years of service to this association. You will truly be missed. With Troy’s departure, we welcome aboard Chris Komarek as our new Southwest Trustee. Chris brings with him several years of experience as a Fire Chief as well as a volunteer in his community of Ellinwood. We look forward to working with Chris. Please take a moment at a fire school to say HI to Chris and welcome him to the Board.
One of the items that was discussed this year at conference was a way to bring more attendance at the annual conference. Out of this discussion, a plan was developed to give away a scholarship to attend conference for those who have not attended before. We will be giving away one scholarship at each regional school this year to encourage new attendees. We look forward to seeing you bring someone new to a regional school and have them participate in the giveaway of the conference attendance scholarship
On the topic of scholarships, a very generous donor contributed $5000.00 to the KSFFA Auxiliary for a new scholarship at this year’s conference. It is in memory of Jason and Emma Pisocki from Soldier Township Fire who were both killed in a motor vehicle accident while returning from enrolling Emma in Hutchinson’s fire science program in 2014. The scholarship will be administered by the Auxiliary and will be awarded to a recipient from the NE region for a student who is in an EMS or Fire program. We greatly appreciate the support shown by this anonymous businessman and thank them for their generosity. This kind of support is truly appreciated by the family of Jason and Emma Pisocki as well as the KSFFA Board.
As we go forward, the KSFFA Executive Board will be working to further our education on cancer reduction in the fire service and we will be working to set a legislative agenda for 2019 based on input received at conference this year. I hope you all have a safe summer and I challenge you to come to a regional school this year. We look forward to seeing you along the way. Stay Safe!
