Fewer fire trucks could be on Wichita roads and some say that would make fire and rescue efforts more dangerous for both firefighters and Wichitans.

For a city of nearly 400,0000 fireman Matt Schulte says squad trucks handle about a third of the department’s calls.

“It has two firemen on it, fully trained to handle any emergency anywhere in the city, car wreck, tornado comes through, big car wreck, or your loved ones not breathing,” says Schulte.

He is also the Wichita Firefighter’s Union president and says Friday Chief Tammy Snow proposed idea to cut 14 department squad trucks.

“We’re not sure how much there is left to cut. Like I said earlier, I’ve been doing this for 31 years and they’ve been cutting the budget every year. We’re almost down to where you can’t.”

Schulte says he hopes elected officials can find a way to help the department, possibly by raising taxes to help fund the department.
