Firefighters respond to basement fire in south Wichita

KSN – April 13, 2018

Fire crews responded to a house fire in south Wichita Thursday.

The fire was reported a little after 5:00 p.m. in the 1700 block of S. Market. When crews arrived they found heavy smoke showing.

WFD Battalion Chief Tom Carney said crews did a great job getting inside the home and containing the fire to the basement.

One occupant was in the home and was able to evacuate safely.

Due to high winds, the firefighters used extreme caution when it came to ventilating the home.

“Normally we try to open up and ventilate when we can, and with the winds the way they are today we are very cautious of when and where we do that,” explained Battalion Chief Carney.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
