Local firefighters responded to a scrap yard just east of Russell Friday afternoon for a fire involving cars and grass.

Russell Grant, Russell City, Gorham and Rural Fire District 5 firefighters responded to the scrap yard at I-70 Towing on Old Highway 40 about a half-mile east of Russell at approximately 12:45 PM Friday after Russell Dispatch received a report of smoke coming from the area and blowing over the highway.

The blaze caught a few cars on fire, as well as the ditch between the scrap yard and the highway.

Russell County Sheriff’s Officers, Russell Police and the Kansas Highway Patrol responded to assist with traffic control and Highway 40 was closed between Amber Drive and 187th Street until the fire was extinguished.

Russell County Emergency Manager Keith Haberer and Russell County EMS also responded.

According to Russell Grant Fire Chief Don Boxberger, the cause of the fire is under investigation.

There were no injuries.
