A fire damaged a Paola house Christmas morning, but both occupants were able to safely escape.

Assistant Paola Fire Chief Bruce Hartig said firefighters responded to 503 N. Pearl St. shortly after midnight on Christmas morning. It appears that the fire started in the detached garage and then spread to the house, but the cause is still being investigated.

Hartig said the husband and wife were awakened by a booming sound coming from outside. The husband looked out and saw that the detached garage was on fire. He quickly got his wife out of the house.

Crews were on the scene for about three hours, and a crew from the Osawatomie Fire Department provided mutual aid assistance. Former Paola volunteer firefighter Greg Cole, who lives nearby, helped out at the scene.

Hartig said the fire spread to the back porch and did heavy damage to the back of the house. It also damaged a pickup in the driveway and caused smoke damage throughout the house.

The damage estimate is about $70,000, Hartig said.

Firefighters were able to keep the blaze from spreading to nearby homes, but there was a little heat damage to a home to the north.
