A garage fire outside of Arkansas City Saturday night may have been caused by lightning that occurred when storms hit the area.

The fire appeared to originate over a breaker box in the detached metal garage at 11224 292nd Road. Lt. Paul Hunter with the Arkansas City Fire Department said the cause can’t be guaranteed, but based on an investigation is most likely a lightning strike.

When firefighters arrives, flames were visible on the east side of the garage and there was heavy smoke.

Firefighters were on the scene before a residence located about 15 to 20 yards away from the garage was in any immediate danger, said Hunter. There were no injuries involved.

Firefighters arrived around 7:20 p.m. and were on scene for a couple hours.

The garage is still standing, although damage amounts will need to be determined by the insurance company, said Hunter.
