Fire may have damaged bridge pillar

Parsons Sun – August 3, 2017

An engineer is to inspect a 20-ton bridge over Lake Creek today (Thursday) after a logjam under the structure caught fire and may have damaged a concrete pillar underneath.

The bridge is north of 7000 Road on Victory Road, which is northeast of Bartlett.

Labette County Public Works closed the bridge to traffic late Wednesday afternoon because of the fire and the damage until the engineer could determine if the damage impacted the structure’s safety.

Sandy Krider, director of Public Works, said Wednesday the smoldering fire was first reported Wednesday morning.

“We don’t know how it started or when it started,” Krider said.

Public Works inspected the underside of the bridge and noticed damage to the pillar. No rebar was showing, so the damage doesn’t appear to go deep into the concrete support, but an engineer will determine the extent of the damage, Krider said.

“We hope that the deck is OK because it’s pretty high up in the air,” Krider said.

A notice the road closure was broadcast on the county’s CodeRed system, which notifies residents of impending weather systems.
