A retired Johnson County firefighter was killed after a four-vehicle crash Thursday morning.

From above, the twisted wreckage showed the horror that unfolded around 10 a.m. morning at K-7 and Parallel Parkway.

Brett Koberlein and his young family were on their way to Walmart when they saw the crash.

“I saw the white SUV come barreling down the road and I was assuming he was going to stop I get past the intersection, I hear a boom! I get a little bit further so I can see better and next thing I know there are pieces of car everywhere,” Koberlein said.

Don Hiatt was pulling out of his dealership when according to KCK Police, a white SUV traveling westbound on Parallel Parkway slammed into a tan SUV that was waiting at the stoplight.

It caused a chain reaction crash into a yellow box truck and another SUV.

The driver of the crushed SUV died at the scene. Police say speed was a factor.

“If I had been two seconds, I would have probably saved him and it would have been me, Hiatt said.

The firefighter, who’s name has not been released yet, worked for the department for 29 years, the Johnson County Fire District No. 2 told 41 Action News.

Officials said his name will be released on Friday.

“It’s just unfortunate he was in the wrong place and the wrong time,” Hiatt said.

People who live and work around here told 41 Action News Thursday evening this intersection is dangerous and something needs to be done.

“A good number of people everyday come westbound on Parallel at 50, 60 mph if not faster,” Koberlein said.

“Speed limit is 65 and there’s no sign that tells them to slow down,” Hiatt said.

They want this tragedy to serve as a wake-up call.

“It’s a straight stretch coming from 110th to K7 so I believe another light maybe two maybe somewhere in there,” Koberlein said.

The driver of the white SUV was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. The drivers of the other vehicles suffered minor injuries.

The victim of a fatal accident on Thursday morning at K-7 and Parallel Parkway has been identified, police said.

The victim was Paul W. Scott, 68. He was a resident of Tonganoxie, Kansas.
