Public Information Manager – Requisition #187096 – closes 7-28-2017

The Office of the State Fire Marshal has an opening for an Unclassified (At-Will), benefit-eligible Public Information Manager position in our Topeka office. Some travel, including overnight may be required of this position.


Duties will include, but are not limited to the following:


  • Serves as the first point of contact for news media contacting the agency.  Fulfills request for agency information from both the media and those making requests for information through the Kansas Open Records Act (KORA).
  • Represents the OSFM at public functions as requested by the State Fire Marshal.
  • Prepares scripts, talking points and speeches for public presentation by self or other agency officials and prepares materials for public presentations.
  • Coordinates requests for speakers.
  • Prepares and/or oversees preparation of news releases, information bulletins, flyers, brochures, newsletters and other written materials that provide constituents with information on agency activities.
  • Collaborates with staff on the development of educational resources on topics such as fire safety, hazardous chemicals, arson, and search and rescue response.
  • Communicates program information to the public, other governmental organizations/agencies, and staff to provide facts and/or education.
  • Coordinates production of audio and visual resources to help further the agency’s educational mission.
  • Manages the agency’s online communication through its website and social media channels.
  • Designs informational materials by taking photographs, proofreading proofs, and making arrangements for printing pamphlets, brochures, signage and other materials.

Pay Rate:  $53,000 – $58,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications.




  • One or more years’ experience in Journalism, Mass Communications, Government Relations, Community Relations or a related field.
  • Strong writer, fluent in Associated Press style, familiar with using page design software as well as video and still photography equipment and software
  • Able to meet very tight deadlines while multi-tasking
  • Mission-focused
  • Quickly comprehends new topics to sufficiently communicate with internal and external audiences
  • Ability to effectively communicate and work with news media, diverse groups and individuals
  • Public speaking ability.
  • Must have a current valid driver’s license.
  • Strong computer skills.
