Firemen battle multiple blazes

Belleville volunteer firemen responded to several emergencies the past week.

June 18 they were called to return to the Brady Stindt farmstead northwest of Belleville, where a fire had demolished a hay shed the week before. Fireman Josh Parde said the wind switched, rekindling remaining hay.

Thursday firemen were called to Melton Motors to re-extinguish a car fire that Cuba firemen put out earlier. The motor caught fire a second time after the vehicle was taken to Meltons.

Firemen were also called to the Matt Cole residence to put out a fire that started on the roof of the house at 1803 23rd St.

“Cause of that fire is undetermined, but the fire marshal is leaning towards lightning,” he said. The fire was contained to the roof.

Friday Belleville volunteers provided mutual aide to the Concordia Fire Department at a house fire at 213 W. 18th Street that destroyed a home owned by the Travis and Lexie Herrman family. Parde said one Concordia fireman suffered heat exhaustion. Belleville volunteers worked to stop the fire from spreading to adjacent houses, he said.

“It melted the tar from under the shingles on the house next door,” he said. “There was roofing tar running down the side of the house”.

The Herrmans were not injured but lost all their possessions. Herrman is a graduate of Pike Valley High School.
