Newton man loses hand to firework

Newton Kansan – July 5, 2017

One Newton man’s life changed on Independence Day, the result of a firework injury.

At about 10:30 p.m. dispatch sent Newton Fire/EMS to a home in the 300 block of Central, where a 47-year-old man reported he had “destroyed his hand.”

According to 911 records, the man’s hand was missing.

“It was pretty serious,” said Scott Metzler, chief of the Newton Fire/EMS department.

The victim’s name has not been released. He was transported to Via Christi St. Francis of Wichita in critical condition.

Metzler told the Kansan the five days designated for fireworks sale and discharge in Newton was a light year for Fire/EMS — with only three fireworks related calls.

Also on July 4 there was one structure fire reported, a garage fire at about 9:30 p.m. July 4 in the 600 block of Autumn Glen.

“It was downgraded to stuff in a garage on fire,” Metzler said. “Some fireworks got into a garage and caught a stroller on fire. They were able to get it out of the garage and the fire out quickly. There was no damage other than loss of a baby stroller.”

The other fire reported to be connected to fireworks came in the 500 block of Meadowlark, a small brush fire.

One other fire was reported during the holiday week, started by a barbecue grill. Both fires were out fairly quickly.

Newton Medical Center reported treating one firework burn injury during the five days of legal sale and discharge within Newton.

It was to be the final night of fireworks in Newton, one peppered with home firework shows city-wide. According to 911 there were about 40 calls of noise complaints to dispatch between June 30 and July 5.

The final noise complaint of the legal fireworks season came in at about 2 a.m. July 5. Roughly half the calls coming into dispatch were noise complaints during legal fireworks discharge hours.

Fireworks discharge was supposed to stop at midnight the night of July 4. Fireworks stands in the area closed on July 4.
