Man’s body found in S. Wichita home after fire

KWCH – July 5, 2017

One man is dead after a late Tuesday-morning house fire in south Wichita.

Wichita Fire Chief Ron Blackwell confirms that a man’s body has been found at the site of a house fire in the 700 Block of South Edgemoor near Kellogg and Edgemoor. The fire happened about 10:15 a.m. Tuesday.

Fire officials have not identified the victim and they haven’t confirmed who owns the home.

Neighbors say a man in his 60’s lived in the home with a dog. When crews responded to the scene, they were not sure if either the man or the dog were inside, but Blackwell says the body of a large-breed dog was found in the home with the man’s body.

In their response to the scene, firefighters initially had to back out of the burning home because there was too much clutter inside for them to get around safely.

The cause of the fire has not been determined. As of 2:30 p.m. Blackwell says firefighters are ceasing the investigation until the man’s body is removed from the home.

Sandra Grayson, who made the 911 call, says two men tried to go into the burning house and break the door down, but they were unable to do so.
She says she witnessed this from a driveway next to the house on fire.

“The smoke was so strong and intense, I ran across the street and I called 911,” she says.
