Teen drowns in lake at Pierson Park while swimming at night

FOX 4 News – June 12, 2017

Police on Sunday confirmed that a teen has drowned in a KCK lake while swimming at night.

Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office said they had pulled the body of a 17-year-old male from the lake at Pierson Park after receiving a call for service shortly before 4 a.m. Sunday. Three 17-year-old males and one 20-year-old male had reportedly been swimming in the area.

The teenager was at an all-night fishing event at the park when he and his friends went out in the water. Around 2 a.m., the 17-year-old called out to his friends for help.

They tried to help him, but couldn’t. They made it to the shore to ask for help. Roughly 12 hours after the teenager yelled for help, crews pulled his body from the water.

Several agencies came out to help to assist in searching, including the Overland Park Dive Team and several boats from Kansas City, Missouri Police.

“Stay out of the water at night,” said Capt. David Thaxton of the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office. “You can’t see what’s out there; you don’t know what’s underneath.”

There was another drowning, at Hillsdale Lake on Friday night in Miami County.

First responders continue to remind people to be safe on the water.

“Stay out of the water,” said Capt. Thaxton. “Think safety. Stay on the shore. Do your fishing; don’t go swimming when you can’t see.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control, roughly 10 people drown in the United States every day. Most of them — 80 percent — are over the age of 15.

Roughly half of all near-drowning requires an emergency room visit, and many result in long term disabilities — anything from memory problems to coma.
