One person sustained life-threatening injuries Monday morning after their home was destroyed by a fire south of Soldier, it was reported.

Jackson County Sheriff Tim Morse said dispatch received a 911 call at 9:14 a.m. that day reporting a structure fire to a home at 3214 Kansas Highway 16.

The Soldier, Holton, Potawatomi Tribal, Hoyt, Mayetta and Havensville Fire Departments all responded to the scene, as well as Jackson County and Potawatomie County EMS.

“The occupant of the residence was transported with life-threatening injuries to a Topeka Hospital,” Morse said Tuesday. “No information as to the patient’s condition is available at this time.”

Morse later confirmed that the owner of the property, Gary Blackwood, had been identified as the injured person in the incident.

Morse said that Blackwood was alert and conscious at the time of transport but was triaged “code red”.

Morse called the home “a total loss,” and said that his office and the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating the cause of the incident.

According to county records, the home was valued at $80,000.
