Chautauqua firefighters get new truck

Chautauqua County Rural Fire Department #6 has received Volunteer Fire Assistance (VFA) grants totaling nearly $9,000 to equip a 5 ton 6×6 truck on loan from the Kansas Forest Service to be used for fire suppression.

Funding for VFA comes from the USDA Forest Service which then awards a grant to the Kansas Forest Service, which administers the program and approves grants to local fire departments. This is a great way for the Kansas Forest Service to assist and encourage rural community fire departments to improve their services.

Eligible applicants serve rural areas and communities with a population of 10,000 or fewer inhabitants. Fire departments approved for funding must match at least 50% of the total project cost with local funding. Fire departments interested in applying for grants next year should contact Ross Hauck at 785-532-3314.
