The Ashland fire trucks were once again pressed into service this past weekend, only this time it was all laughs and giggles.

As they have for more than forty years, the Ashland Fire Department loaded up their trucks last Saturday and transported the kids of the community down Ashland’s Main Street to the annual Easter Egg hunt at the Christian Church Camp.

The entire event is sponsored by the Ashland Civic Club.

“It’s just a community service that we’ve done for years,” Bill Neier said of the AFD’s involvement in the parade. “It’s fun, it’s one of those things that I look forward to every year.”

Neier, who has been a member of the Ashland Fire Department for twenty-nine years, said Saturday’s use of the fire trucks was a welcome change of pace for the men of the local volunteer firefighting team.

“It was a relief,” he calmly stated.

Of the seventeen active members of the Ashland Fire Department, Neier said fourteen were involved in the Easter Egg Hunt parade this past weekend. “Several of them were here with their kids and they rode on the back with them,” he noted.

Ironically, going into the parade Neier said he was unsure of how many firefighters would show up for this year’s event. “I was getting nervous,” he stated. “I was begging people over the radio and the next thing I know, we had two guys per truck.”

This year’s use of the fire trucks for the Easter Egg Hunt parade was a welcome sight–given the fact that last year the trucks were not available.

It was just a year ago when the Ashland Fire Department had been called out on two separate occasions the day before the scheduled Easter Egg Hunt.

“We’d been out all day and half the night so we didn’t have a chance to wash the trucks”, Neier explained. “You don’t want to put little kids up there in that mess. You see what we look like when we come back from a fire. They don’t need to get that crud all over them.”

He went on to say that he was surprised by the reaction to pull the fire trucks from the Easter Egg parade last year. “Man, the kids were disappointed,” Neier said. “Everyone wants to ride on a fire truck.”

“This year we had Green Jay Day to wash the trucks so they were nice and clean,” he added.

As the kids were loading on the fire trucks last Saturday, Neier said he found it interesting that there were no questions or comments from the kids about the fires earlier last month that threatened the very existence of their town.

“I think kids rebound quicker than us older folks,” he said with a chuckle.

Just how much they had rebounded was quickly evident once the ride to the Christian Church Camp started.

“We decided we weren’t going to use the sirens near as much this year and all you could hear was kids pounding on the cabs saying ‘we want the sirens’!”

So the sirens came on.

“It gives you a warm spot in your heart,” Neier said of the fire department’s involvement with the annual Easter Egg Hunt. “Everybody has a good time.”

Fireman Bill Neier is also our fireman to teach the pre school children and kindergarten kids about fire safety. They always get to squirt water. He is helped by fireman Jerome Berryman most years. Our community service is important communication between the public and the department.
