Firefighters look to ‘fill the boot’ this weekend

Salina firefighters will once again be asking area residents to “fill the boot” during their annual fundraising campaign supporting the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

According to Chris Rios, a firefighter-paramedic with the Salina Fire Department for almost eight years and the coordinator of MDA fundraising for the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 782, local firefighters will be at the corners of Crawford and Broadway and Crawford and Ohio this weekend asking people to make donations to the cause.

“We’re hoping to set a new record this year for donations we’ve received,” Rios said. This year’s goal is $16,500, having collected $15,128 in 2016.

Firefighters will be at those two intersections from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday and again from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Rios said the firefighters plan to have a couple more fundraising activities to help the MDA later this year, but those plans have yet to be finalized.
