Decatur County firefighters were called out Tuesday evening to a vehicle fire at Decatur County Beef, but it turned out the fire crew wasn’t needed.

Fire Chief Bill Cathcart said a  full crew and four vehicles, including a pumper, tank truck and two quick-attack trucks, responded to a report of a vehicle fire at the feed yard at 8:35 p.m. When they got there, employees with fire extinguishers had put out the blaze.

“The employees noticed it right away and called us for backup,” Mr. Cathcart said, noting that if the employees hadn’t acted as quickly as they did, the firefighters would have been needed.

Chief Cathcart said he thought the fire had been caused by an electrical short. The blaze was contained in the engine compartment but the heat damaged the inside of the cab of the 1988 Mack commodities truck.
