A fire Tuesday night caused significant structural damage to a Concordia home.

Concordia Fire Chief Eric Voss reported that fire department personnel responded to the call of a fire at 403 E. Fifth St. at about 7:35 p.m., and at the same time received a call of a vehicle accident west of Concordia.

When firefighters arrived on scene there was significant smoke and flames coming from the exterior walls.

Voss said the residents of the home were alerted by smoke detectors, and were able to get out without injury. He said the smoke detectors were still going off Wednesday morning.

Firefighters battled the blaze for five hours, and stayed on the scene all night to make sure the fire did not reignite.

“There was so much collapse inside we were worried about rekindle,” Voss said.

Once the fire was initially knocked down, firefighters helped remove personal items from the home.

Voss said the ladder truck was used to pur water through the roof and into the walls.

According to Voss, the fire started near the chimney in-between the ceiling of the first floor and the floor of the second floor of the home, and the cause had something to do with the fireplace used to heat the home.

“Make sure you clean out chimneys and have fireplaces and wood heaters inspected,” Voss said.

Voss said he would like to thank everyone for the excellent support including the Concordia Police Department, Cloud County Sheriff’s Department, Kansas Highway Patrol and utility companies.

Belleville EMS came to Concordia to help cover during the fire and vehicle accident.
