Fire crews battle house fire in Derby

KWCH – March 10, 2017

Firefighters spent several hours on scene of a house fire in Derby early Friday morning.

Derby Fire Chief Brad Smith said crews got the call around 12:35 a.m. Friday.

“When crews got here, there was quite a bit of flame showing from the back side of the house,” Smith said.

Smith added three people were inside the house at the time of the fire and they made it out safely. He said the three reported an explosion in the house, but it is not clear what caused it.

Crews do not yet know what caused the fire.

Laurie Monaraz lives in a neighboring home. She said her roommate woke her up to tell her about the fire. She said all they could see was the house blazing on fire.

“To me, it’s just sad,” Monaraz said. “Someone just lost their home tonight. It’s scary, but I think these guys have done a wonderful job containing the fire, putting it out and saving the rest of the neighborhood, too.”
