The Office of the State Fire Marshal has an opening for an Unclassified Fire Protection Specialist.  This is advanced technical and administrative work in the Fire Prevention Division.  Work includes but is not limited to the review of fire and life safety design features and/or modifications of new and existing facilities; review of architectural/engineering plans and code footprints or drawings for compliance with applicable fire and life safety requirements for new construction and/or existing occupancies in Kansas that are regulated by the Kansas Fire Prevention Code.  Work is very technical in nature and requires extensive working knowledge of architecture and engineering, fire and life safety codes, plans review techniques, code footprints and construction.  Occupancies regulated include all places where people work, live and congregate with the exception of one and two family dwellings.  Extensive travel, including overnight is required of this position.


Closing Date:  3/21/2017


Salary:  $21.13 per hour.


Minimum Requirements:  Four years’ experience in fire protection systems, building construction, life safety features and building and fire codes.  Kansas certification as a Fire Inspector I.  Obtain certification as a Fire Protection Specialist and Certified Plans Examiner within twelve months of hire date.  Must have a current valid driver’s license.  Must have knowledge of the Kansas Fire Prevention Code, the 2012 National Fire Life Safety Code, 2012 International Building Code and 2012 International Fire Code.  Must have extensive field experience as well as code and mechanical aptitude background.  Must have exceptional skills in oral and written communication; must have strong computer skills.  This position requires certification with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services within twelve months of hire date.


This position is located in the Topeka office.  Residency within Topeka or the surrounding area is required.
