Crews from multiple areas are on the scene in the small town of Ransom in northwest Ness County battling fires that began west of town and entered city limits.

Multiple homes were destroyed by the wind-swept fires on the west edge, and there have been a few reports of people sent to the hospital with smoke inhalation.

Firefighters were on the scene early Monday afternoon as the first hit and quickly spread fast by the strong winds.

Crews from as far away as Hays sent a responding unit to the fires.

There also were large fires in other portions of Ness County near Beeler, and one more that started in Brownell as crews were battling the Ransom blaze.

Firefighters are still on scene as of 5:10 p.m. Monday battling the flames and conditions.

It was not immediately known how many structures were damaged in Ransom, or nearby Brownell.
