Firefighters battle large grass fire in Kingman County

KWCH – March 3, 2017

A large grass fire could be seen from the KWCH-12 Sky Camera Thursday afternoon.

The fire was located in Kingman County, five and 1.2 miles straight north of Cunningham.

Firefighters say it was a controlled burn that escalated when the wind picked up, eventually jumping the highway.

Firefighters from Cunningham, Kingman, Reno County and several other departments responded.

It only took a few hours to knock the fire down.

The Cunningham assistant fire chief says the wind made it difficult to get ahead of the fire.

Most of the crews that responded to this fire are a volunteer.

The assistant fire chief says he doesn’t expect to get much sleep the next couple days as firefighters are on high alert for more grass fires.
