Semi Tire Sparks Turnpike Wildfire

El Dorado firefighters had a busy Wednesday fighting one controlled burn and one wild.

Firefighters started their day helping El Dorado City public utility workers to burn the Legiona property Wednesday morning. The controlled burn helps clean the property in order of the disc golf course being built later this spring.

Then around 1 p.m. firefighters received a call to a pasture fire around mile marker 77 of the Kansas Turnpike just east of the U.S. 77 junction. The fire was near the 200 acre fire the department fought on Feb. 17.

The fire seemed to be ignited by a semi truck tire that had rolled into the ditch. Crews were aided in keeping control of the fire by a north wind to allow firefighters to catch it before it spread beyond the highway.
