Fatal wreck west of Pittsburg claims life of Columbus woman

A Columbus woman was killed Wednesday when the vehicle in which she was a passenger overturned west of Pittsburg.

According to a release from the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department, at about 10:46 a.m. a Doyle D. Shook, 48, of Columbus, was driving east on K126 near 170th street in a 2002 Chevy Silverado pickup. According to the release, Shook went off the road in the south ditch, overcorrected and entered the north ditch where the truck struck a cluster of mailboxes, a culvert and then rolled multiple times.

Shook’s passenger Anissa A. Shook, 45, was ejected from the truck and was pronounced dead at the scene. Doyle Shook, who was wearing his seatbelt according to the release, was taken by Eagle Med helicopter to Freeman Hospital in Joplin after being extricated from the vehicle, where he was treated and released.

CCSO, the Baker Fire Department, Crawford County EMS and the Kansas Department of Transportation all assisted at the scene.

Traffic on K126 between K7 and Highway 69 was shut down for an extended period because of the wreck.
