Salina Fire Department’s promotions

The Salina Fire Department has announced the following promotions:

• Capt. Derrick Herzog has been named a battalion chief.


Herzog was hired as a firefighter/EMT in June 1999. He was promoted to fire engineer in 2006 and fire lieutenant in 2007. He has been serving the department as a fire captain since February 2008.

Additionally, Herzog was responsible for proposing and beginning the Salina Fire Department’s Honor Guard team.

In his new position as battalion chief, Herzog will function as part of the department’s administrative staff and is responsible for operational command of all the Salina Fire Department’s stations, apparatus and personnel during his shifts.

• Kendall Johnson has been named a fire lieutenant.


Johnson joined the Salina Fire Department in January 2007 as a firefighter/EMT. After being hired, he attended Barton Community College, where he graduated with an Associates of Applied Science in Emergency Medical Services-Paramedic. He was promoted to a paramedic in 2009. In 2010, he gained his critical care paramedic certification and subsequent paramedic II rank in 2014. Johnson was promoted to fire engineer in March 2016 and is a member of the KSTF-8 technical rescue team.

In his new position as lieutenant, Johnson will function as a company level officer and is responsible for the supervision of personnel assigned to his apparatus. His duties include the training of his crew, fire prevention activities, fire suppression and the department’s EMS service delivery mission.

• Josh Foley has been named a fire captain.


Foley first joined the department in June 1999 as a firefighter/EMT. After a brief departure, he returned to the department in January 2005. Foley was promoted to fire engineer/EMT in 2009 and then fire lieutenant in 2015.

Foley has served as an adjunct instructor for KU Fire Service Training as an instructor of the driver/operator class, was the founding member of the SOG committee, and served on the department’s planning and improvement team and the city’s employee council.

In his new position as captain, Foley will be responsible for the management of the apparatus, station and personnel in one of four run areas within the city.

• Riley Hawbaker has been named a fire engineer.


Hawbaker joined the department in March 2006 as a firefighter/EMT. After being hired, he furthered his responsibilities as a HAZMAT technician and is on Salina’s HAZMAT team. Riley also is a rescue specialist on the region’s state technical rescue team.

Additionally, Hawbaker has instructed many Salina Fire Department classes and has assisted with instructing rescue classes at Crisis City.

In his new position as an engineer, Hawbaker will be responsible for driving and operating the various apparatus in the department’s fleet.

    Very proud of the Salina Fire Department Personal, it is great to see some of the people I was able to hire as young firefighters advance in there careers
