Last night the Independence fire department responded to two separate structure fires that each were reported to be total losses.

At 6:33 p.m. all units responded to 610 Fountain in Independence for a house fire. The first unit on scene reported that the back half of the home was “fully involved” with possible occupants still inside. The structure was a single story, wood frame, single family dwelling with a basement.

The initial crew performed a primary search throughout the home while advancing a water line through the interior of the structure while a separate crew of firefighters attempted to control the flames from the back outside of the home.

Staff reported that once the primary search of the structure was completed the search team transitioned to the attack crew” to help extinguish the flames. The search team found that there were not any occupants within the structure at the time of the fire.

The fire was extinguished and an overhaul was performed. According to the occupant of the structure, below the back porch was a concrete slab that he had decided to burn trash on when the flames got out of control and started the porch and wall on fire. The final unit cleared the scene at 8:39 p.m.

Meanwhile, at 8:02 p.m. units were responding to 912 West Cottonwood for a report of a structure fire involving a stove and porch. This dwelling was also a single family, single story wooden framed house with heavy fire coming from the side porch area and the front of the structure, according to reports.

A second and third alarm was sounded to gain additional help in battling the flames. An initial knockdown was attempted from the exterior of the structure and porch and an additional line was ran through the front door to tackle the fire from the interior as well.

It was reported that after the fire was extinguished an extensive overhaul was required. The fire was thought to be started by a wood burning heater located on the side porch. The final unit cleared the scene at 10:34 p.m. No injuries were reported at either fire.
