Those driving on north U.S. Highway 83 Thursday afternoon were cautioned to stay away from near Road G as area fire crews were battling a blaze in the area.

Seward County Fire Rescue crews responded to the call at 1:12 p.m. Thursday, and were dispatched to a reported garage fire with five vehicles involved in the 8000 block of Road G, according to a release from Seward County Fire Chief Andrew Barkley.

“Upon arrival, firefighters found a vehicle fully involved next to a metal shop, 50 acres of vegetation, multiple vehicles and farm equipment on fire,” Barkley’s release noted. “Units quickly extinguished the vehicle threatening the structure, and moved on to the vegetation fire. The fire was contained in 43 minutes with 10 firefighters, assisted by three local farmers who responded with tractors and discs, and Turpin Fire Department with five firefighters. Firefighters remained on the scene for six hours mopping up hot spots.”

The cause of the fire is contributed to the burning of trash in a container, Barkley’s release continued, and there were no injuries. The Seward County Sheriff’s Office and Seward County EMS also responded to the incident.
