Topeka firefighters had a blaze to battle at an empty restaurant and nightclub building early Wednesday.

Firefighters were called to the 1400 block of SE Washington, the Famous Door restaurant and nightclub, around 5:50 a.m. Early reports indicated the building was fully involved in flames.

Shawnee County Dispatch tells 13 News Topeka Fire received the majority of their calls from drivers along I-70 who saw the fire from near the Adams St. exit.

Dispatchers told 13 News the fire was under control as of 6:20 a.m. Firefighters on-scene told 13 News it was difficult to get to the fire, due to the construction of the ceiling in the building.

A preliminary investigation indicates the cause of the fire to be likely from the malfunction of electrical circuits, but the Topeka Fire Department officially says it’s undetermined.

Damage estimates total $125,000 to both structure and contents.
