Crews contain building fire in N. Wichita

KWCH – February 13, 2017

Wichita firefighters have contained the fire to a building near 20th and Broadway. No one was hurt. There was extensive damage to the building, but Wichita Fire Chief Ron Blackwell says it’s believed the building was empty, even though there are a few names of businesses on the outside of the structure.

Crews fought the blaze for more than two hours. At one point, more than 50 firefighters were on the scene.

Firefighters have not determined what caused the fire. Blackwell says crews saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof and the front of the building when they arrived on the scene.

“(We) deployed a series of aerial and elevated streams (of water) as the fire vented itself through the roof,” Blackwell says. “Forced entry into the building with heavy water streams. At one point during the firefight, (crews) were forced from the building because of concerns of a possible collapse.”
