Grass fire spreads along Comanche-Kiowa line

KAKE – February 8, 2017

Comanche County officials say a large grass fire along the Kiowa County line is now contained.

Emergency Management Director John Lehman estimates 4,000 to 6,000 acres of countryside was burned. He told KAKE News Tuesday night no evacuations were required, and no one was injured.

Lehman noted at one point, winds pushed the flames into Kiowa County. Comanche County EMS Director David Kutz told KAKE News Kiowa County firefighters were watching for possible flare-ups.

Beyond the land, the only property damage may be to fire trucks. Lehman said several vehicles lost tires because they had to go onto rocky terrain.

A cause for the fire has not been announced. But Lehman said it started close to a road.

Comanche County Emergency Communications said five counties were fighting the fire. The fire departments involved are Clark, Comanche, Barber, Pratt, and Kiowa Counties.
