The Arkansas City Fire/EMS Department was host to representatives from Hallmark Tuesday as they prepared to memorialize the department’s 1932 Buick as a Christmas ornament.

Fire chief Bobby Wolfe said Hallmark first contacted the department several months ago, seeking it out for unique ideas for Hallmark’s “Fire Brigade” series of ornaments, expressing interest in the old Buick.

“They came and found us,” Wolfe said. “It’s really pretty neat.”

The 1932 Buick was once used in a bank robbery, but was later turned into a fire truck.

It served throughout the 1950s until its later retirement.

Then, in 1991, the Buick was rediscovered and purchased by the donations of private individuals and Ark City businesses, and returned to the fire department.

Hallmark artist Robert Hurlbert said this vehicle was very unique and was among the most interesting of the eight fire departments the group had visited recently.

‘It really has a good story to it,” Hurlbert said.

The ornament is scheduled for release in July 2018.
