Colby Fire Department responded to a field fire Tuesday at Colby Wrecking Yard/Wagoner and Sons about a mile east of Colby.

Assistant Fire Chief Sean Hankin said the fire department received a call at 12:02 p.m. and arrived on the scene at 12:06 p.m. The cause of the fire was from heavy wind blowing embers from a barrel fire out on to grass on the property.

“It was accidental,” Hankin said. “Sparks from the contained barrel fire got blown. It wasn’t anything too serious.”

The fire crew took around 10 minutes to put out the fire, Hankin said. It was easily contained and it actually took the crew longer to refill the water tank on the fire truck than to extinguish the fire.
