The Phillips County Sheriff’s office has taken a suspect into custody following a suspected arson fire around 2:15 p.m. Saturday in the 300 block of Sixth Street, according to the department.

The sheriff’s office was dispatched to a residence belonging to Shanon Jarvis and upon arriving found smoke coming from the home.

The Phillipsburg Fire department quickly extinguished the fire, restricting the damage to the sound end of the home.

Upon extinguishing the fire, fire personnel determined suspicious material was present and a search warrant was obtained.

The scene was secured by Phillips County REACT members overnight and upon executing the search warrant at 8 a.m. Sunday, the sheriff’s office came to the conclusion there was possible drug activity at the residence. Later Sunday morning, the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s office investigators determined the fire was caused by arson.

The investigation is ongoing and charges are pending. The name of the suspect in custody was not released.
